In today’s episode of Fight Gym’s Boxing Basics we’re going to look at how to wrap your hands for boxing training.
When wrapping the hand, we don’t want to just cover the knuckles but make the hand one unit. The knuckles should be tied in with the thumb and wrist. This is so when we strike, the bones, knuckles and tendons don’t get spread out – they stay as one solid unit. I always pre-roll my wraps as I find it much easier to wrap when it’s pre-rolled.
- Put your thumb into the loop, start supporting the wrist by working the wrap around the wrist three times. Notice I’ve layered it each time coming up. Now, we wrap it around the knuckles three times. Following this, we bring the wrap across the wrist to lock it in
- Give the wrist one extra wrap and then go once around the thumb. From this, take the wrap around the wrist
- Now we are going to have a look at going through the fingers. From the wrist take the wrap through the first finger and then lock it off at the wrist. Next, take the hand wrap though the second finger and lock it off at the wrist. Do this process for each finger and lock it off at the wrist each time.
- Do a criss-cross figure with the hand wrap (like an “X”) across the hand and wrist. When the wrap is up by your knuckles, take the hand wrap around the knuckles
- Use up the extra hand wrap by taking the wrap in the criss-cross figure over your hand and around the wrist
- Finish by tying the wrap up
